Road crash site to get more warning signs installed, says DWP

The DWP has ordered a new safety notice sign for the site of an accident which took place near the north-west Auckland city centre last week.

It is the second major accident in the Southland and second fatal accident involving the site since a DWP site manager was arrested in October.

Widespread anger began when images of the police car that was involved in the accident were released last week.

A DWP spokesman said it needed to make sure the new signage reflected the warning it had received after receiving an emergency call from one of its workers.

DWP's first major accident was in September 2008 near New Plymouth when a car hit another car near Oamaru.

It took around a year for the DWP to review the scene, after the police car had been taken down and replaced.

DWP spokesman Adam Prentice said a reminder of the warning was now in place for the road on New Zealand's North Island.

"It should show at least three months after the accident the owner, or a person that is acting as the owner, has stopped in this way and that it is safe to do so," he said.

"It was just a call about where one of the vehicles was last seen and the company was given a notice of an accident by police in the area where the scene was, and the company knew they had to go there if they wanted the notice."

Mr Prentice said the DWP had not started construction of the new sign until later on Saturday.

It was the second fatal accident in the region since the death of an 88-year-old man, a bus driver, at the site in October.
